Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 15 Southern New Hampshire University scored three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over seventh-ranked UMass Lowell in Northeast-10 men's soccer in front of 1,033 at Larkin Field Wednesday evening. The Penmen improved to 12-2 and 8-2 in the NE-10, while the River Hawks suffered their first league loss of the season and fell to 11-2-1 and 10-1 in NE-10 action.
The win, coupled with ties by Merrimack and Franklin Pierce in earlier action Wednesday, moved Southern New Hampshire into sole possession of second place in the Northeast-10 standings.
After a scoreless first half, Southern New Hampshire got on the board 14:36 into the second half. Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) played a ball from the right end line to Miguel Carneiro (New Milford, Conn.), who fired from 10 yards into the upper right corner of the goal for his third goal of the season.
Jordan Branco (Norton, Mass.) made it 2-0 in the 68th minute. After taking a pass from Tsonis, he found himself against a River Hawk defender at the top of the box. Branco tipped the ball to his right, then fired low inside the near right post for his fourth goal of the season. Chris Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.) added an insurance goal with 7:20 left when he found himself all alone after UML keeper Chris Maierle came out to play Tsonis. Pereira took the deflected ball and walked in alone for his second goal of the season.
Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made one save to pick up his second straight shutout and seventh of the season, while Maierle turned aside eight shots. Southern New Hampshire held a commanding 25-6 shot advantage and took nine corner kicks to UMass Lowell's one.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it hosts the University of New Haven in a 4:00 contest at Larkin Field.
