Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Roy Mabrey finished with 22 points as Saint Anselm College downed Southern New Hampshire University 89-67 in Northeast-10 men's basketball Tuesday night at Saint Anselm's Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. Both teams now sit 3-1 overall and 1-1 in NE-10 play.
Mabrey finished 6-9 from the floor and made all seven of his free throw attempts while going 3-4 behind the arc to lead three Hawks in double figures. Dino Mallios totaled 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Chris Santo recorded 18 points on 8-14 shooting off the bench.
Junior Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) and freshman Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) led Southern New Hampshire with 16 points apiece. Sanders also grabbed nine rebounds. B.J. Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) added 11 points for Southern New Hampshire.
The two teams traded the lead five times in the opening 10 minutes before a three by John Nielsen 9:35 before intermission put the Hawks up for good, 18-15. Saint Anselm took control with a late 12-3 run to build a 38-23 lead following a pair of Santo free throws with just under a minute left, and took a 38-25 lead into the locker room.
Saint Anselm scored the first six points of the second half to push the lead to 19 1:23 into the second half. The Penmen outscored the Hawks 13-4 over the next three minutes and a Sanders basket with 15:19 on the clock made it 48-38. SNHU pulled within eight, 55-47, with 12:22 left on another Sanders bucket, but that was as close as the guests would get, as Saint Anselm led by as many as 25 the rest of the way.
Saint Anselm shot 46.2% overall and connected on eight of its 19 three point attempts while also going 21-27 at the free throw line. The Hawks held Southern New Hampshire to 36.2% shooting on the night, including a 6-19 effort from long range, and the Penmen were 11-15 at the charity stripe. Both teams collected 40 rebounds while the hosts turned 16 SNHU turnovers into 21 points.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Wednesday, November 28 when it travels to No. 8 Franklin Pierce University for a 7:30 Northeast-10 game.
