Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) and Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) combined for 34 points as Southern New Hampshire University downed Saint Anselm College 59-45 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Tuesday night at Saint Anselm's Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Penmen improved to 2-0 overall and in NE-10 play, while the Hawks are 2-2 and 0-2 in the league.
Sorrell led the Penmen with 18 points on 8-14 shooting and also added six rebounds, five steals and a pair of blocked shots, while Wiseman finished one point shy of her career high with 16 points on 7-10 shooting while also grabbing six boards. Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added eight points.
Briana Jones led Saint Anselm with 13 points while Krista O'Gara added 12 points off the bench.
Southern New Hampshire trailed 17-14 with eight and a half minutes left in the first half before it closed out the frame on a 16-3 run, including the final 11 points of the half. A DeRoma three gave the Penmen the lead for good, 22-20, with 4:39 left before intermission, and a Sorrell steal and layup seconds before the buzzer made it 30-20 at the break.
The Penmen quickly put the game out of reach by opening the second half on a 10-2 run as Sorrell's layup with 17:38 left made it 40-22. DeRoma gave Southern New Hampshire its largest lead, 45-24, with 14:21 to go as the guests maintained at least a 12-point cushion the rest of the way.
SNHU connected on its first six three-point attempts on the contest and finished 7-13 behind the arc (53.8%) while shooting 46% overall. The Penmen held the Hawks to 31% shooting for the game, including a 3-16 effort from three-point land. SNHU outrebounded Saint Anselm 42-30.
Southern New Hampshire opens its home schedule Sunday afternoon when it hosts Chestnut Hill College in a 1:30 non-conference tilt at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
