Women's Basketball Suffers First Setback at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Brittany Martelle totaled 15 points off the bench to lead Franklin Pierce University to a 69-51 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at The Fieldhouse Wednesday night.  The Ravens improve to 3-2 and 1-2 in NE-10 play with the win, while the Penmen suffered their first loss of the season and are 3-1 and 2-1 in the league.

Martelle finished 5-6 behind the three-point arc to pace three players in double figures.  Tiffany Johnson recorded 13 points, while Kara Charette added 10 points and five rebounds.

Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) was the lone SNHU player to finish in double figures as she notched 10 points and seven rebounds.  Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) registered nine points, while Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) and Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) added seven points apiece.  Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) tallied six points and seven assists.

Franklin Pierce never trailed and used a 7-0 spurt to open up a 29-13 lead with 8:10 remaining in the first half following a Martelle three-pointer.  The Penmen pulled within 12, 31-19, on a Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) basket with just over six minutes to play before intermission.  Franklin Pierce led 36-21 at the break.

Springfield sank a pair of free throws six seconds into the second half to cut the lead to 13 before Franklin Pierce before the Ravens scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to open up a 46-25 lead with 17:05 to go.  FPU led by as many as 29 points the rest of the way.

The hosts knocked down nine of their 18 three-point attempts on the evening and shot 42.6% overall while holding the Penmen to 34.5% shooting for the game, including a 1-8 effort from long range.  Southern New Hampshire held a 41-38 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts second-ranked Bentley University in a 1:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
