No. 2 Bentley Grinds Out 52-42 Women's Hoop Win

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Courtney Finn had a game-high 18 points as No. 2 Bentley University outlasted Southern New Hampshire University 52-42 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Falcons remain unbeaten at 5-0 and 4-0 in the NE-10, while the Penmen now sit 3-2 and 2-2 in the league.

The win was victory No. 700 for Falcon head coach Barbara Stevens at Bentley.  Stevens is 700-153 in 27 seasons at Bentley and has a career record of 857-244 including stints at Clark and Massachusetts.

Finn finished 7-8 at the free throw line and also grabbed eight rebounds.  Jacqui Brugliera was the other Bentley player to finish in double figures as she totaled 11 points and seven rebounds.

Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) paced Southern New Hampshire with 12 points and 12 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season.  Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) added six points apiece for the Penmen.

The first half saw two ties and 10 lead changes.  The Penmen jumped out to an 8-2 lead 3:05 into the game, but Bentley countered with seven straight points to go up 9-8 at the 13:50 mark.  Neither side led by more than three the rest of the half, with the Falcons eking out a 20-17 lead on a Finn basket 7:35 before intermission.  SNHU scored the next four points and a Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) basket with 6:04 left gave the hosts a 21-20 lead.  The Penmen led 25-22 with 2:23 left on an Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) basket and held a 25-24 lead at intermission.

Sorrell scored the first points of the second half by either team at the 17:17 mark to put SNHU up 27-24, but an 8-1 run capped by a Lauren Battista basket with 14:19 to go gave the guests a 32-28 advantage.  A basket by Meghan Ballard (Rutland, Vt.) with 11:41 left pulled the Penmen within one, 35-34, but Bentley held Southern New Hampshire scoreless for nearly the next five minutes, as Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) scored at the 7:03 mark to make it 41-36.  That was as close as the Penmen found themselves the rest of the way.

Bentley, which shot just 27.6% for the contest, finished 18-26 at the free throw line while the Penmen converted four of their eight chances at the stripe.  The Falcons turned 25 Southern New Hampshire turnovers into 21 points as the guests held a 21-6 edge in points off turnovers.  SNHU, which outrebounded Bentley 43-42, shot just 33.9% overall and was 0-6 behind the arc.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Stonehill College in a 5:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
