Women's Basketball Holds Off Post 66-57

Box Score

WATERBURY, Conn.Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) and Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) each finished with season highs in scoring with 21 and 19 points, respectively to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 66-57 non-conference women's basketball victory over Post University at the Drubner Center Saturday afternoon.  The Penmen improve to 5-4 overall with their second straight win, while the Eagles saw a four-game win streak snapped and are now 6-4.

Sorrell posted her sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds, in the process moving into sixth place on SNHU's career scoring list, as she now has 1,207 points.  Sorrell finished 9-16 from the field.  DeRoma was 8-17 from the floor, while Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) was the other Penmen player in double figures as she tallied 12 points on 5-8 shooting.

Aubrey Latham paced Post with 15 points, while Raven Wright-James added 11 points for the Eagles.

With the game tied 33-33 at halftime, Southern New Hampshire opened the second stanza with an 8-0 run and a Sorrell layup with 16:57 remaining gave the Penmen a 41-33 lead.  SNHU extended its lead to 11, 52-41, on a basket by Meghan Ballard (Rutland, Vt.) with 12:09 remaining.

The Penmen held a 60-48 advantage with 6:22 left following a Sorrell basket before the Eagles scored seven unanswered points to pull within five on a Jessica Webber three with 3:41 left.  That would be as close as the hosts would get as Southern New Hampshire allowed just one field goal the rest of the way.

Southern New Hampshire held the hosts off the scoreboard for the game's first 5:10 and opened up a 14-0 lead following a layup by DeRoma at the 15:03 mark.  The Eagles used a 14-2 run capped by a Webber basket 8:43 before intermission to pull within two, 18-16.  The Penmen countered with an 8-2 spurt, and Deborah LaValley's (Rochester, N.H.) basket at the 5:54 mark gave SNHU a 26-18 lead.  Post took its first lead with 2:38 to go when Latham's basket made it 29-28, ending an 11-2 run.  The two teams traded the lead three times before going in tied at the break.

The Penmen shot 44.1% for the contest while limiting the Eagles to 27.8% shooting in the second half and 31.4% for the game.  Southern New Hampshire, which held a 49-35 rebounding advantage, was 14-16 at the free throw line while Post converted seven of its 11 chances at the charity stripe.

Southern New Hampshire is idle until Sunday, December 30 when it travels to LIU Post for a 3:00 contest.  The next Penmen home game is slated for Sunday, January 6 when SNHU entertains UMass Lowell in a 1:30 Northeast-10 game.
