MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) poured in a career-high 25 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 76-66 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Bentley University Saturday afternoon. The Penmen snapped a four-game slide and evened their overall record at 12-12 while improving to 8-11 in the NE-10. The Falcons fall to 15-8 and 11-8 in the league.
The win also snapped a six-game Bentley win streak in the series dating back to 2008-09.
Dobrovic finished 10-15 from the floor and 3-6 behind the arc while also recording 10 rebounds and five assists. BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) totaled 15 points on 7-16 shooting, while Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) was 5-9 from the field and added 12 points and a pair of blocked shots. CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Jasper Grassa paced Bentley with 19 points, going 5-11 from long range. Sam Leclerc totaled 16 points, while Andrew Shaw drained three three-pointers and added 14 points.
Southern New Hampshire trailed just once, at 2-0, and opened up a 16-4 lead 6:35 into the game following a three-pointer by Josh Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, Md.). The Falcons used a 9-2 capped by a Shaw three at the 9:26 mark to pull within five, 18-13. Bentley pulled within two, 24-22, following a Leclerc three with 4:49 left before intermission, but the Penmen outscored their guests 12-5 the rest of the half and opened up a 36-27 halftime advantage.
The Penmen made their first nine field goal attempts of the second half and built a 56-41 lead with 13:20 remaining following a basket by Bonsignore. Southern New Hampshire maintained a double-digit lead until the final minute, taking its largest lead, 71-51, with 6:44 remaining on a Bonsignore three.
Southern New Hampshire shot better than 50% for the third time in five games, shooting 61.5% in the second half and 54.5% for the game while limiting the Falcons to 40% shooting for the contest. SNHU was 7-13 from the free throw line while Bentley was 11-17, and the Falcons were 11-31 behind the arc while the Penmen were 7-20. Southern New Hampshire held a 36-32 rebounding advantage.
SNHU hosts its final regular season home contest of 2011-12 Tuesday when it entertains Stonehill College in a 7:30 contest for Senior Night.
