MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University baseball standouts Tim Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) were named to the Capital One Academic All-America team as members of the Third Team, it was announced Thursday.

The Capital One Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  The program has expanded for 2011-12, with separate Academic All-District and All-America teams selected in Divisions I, II and III, as well as the College division for NAIA, junior college and Canadian institutions.

Flight and Spatkowski are the ninth and 10th SNHU student-athletes to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, joining Judy Crawford (softball, 1986), Warren Lewis (men's soccer, 1993), Nick Therrien (ice hockey, 1998), Lotta Thunberg (women's soccer, 1998), Brian Larrabee (men's basketball, 2003), Julie Kraus (women's lacrosse, 2008, 2009) , Libby Parent (women's lacrosse, 2009) and Jordan Branco (men's soccer, 2011)

Flight, a junior athletically but a senior academically who recently graduated with a degree in Business Studies was named the ABCA and NCBWA Division II Pitcher of the Year as well as a First Team All-American.  In 15 starts this season, the lefthander finished 9-1 with a 1.30 earned run average and 140 strikeouts in 102.2 innings of work.  Also the Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Year, Flight ranks among the national leaders in strikeouts, ERA and strikeouts per nine innings.  He anchors a Penmen staff that ranks among the tops in Division II statistically.

Spatkowski, who recently graduated with a degree in Sport Management, was one of the offensive leaders for the Penmen in 2012.  Appearing in 52 games and splitting time between catcher and designated hitter, he led the Penmen with a .319 batting average while knocking in 22 runs and scoring a team-high 49.  A co-captain and Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference selection, Spatkowski hit safely in each of SNHU's eight postseason contests, batting .345 in the NCAA Tournament.

The SNHU baseball team enjoyed its best season in 2012, posting a school record for wins with a 43-15 record.  The Penmen qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time, capturing the East Region title and advancing to the Division II College World Series, where they won their first game 3-2 over Minnesota State.
