NORTHEAST-10 RELEASE
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – A total of seven Southern New Hampshire University spring student-athletes were named to their respective Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams announced late Monday. Baseball standouts Tim Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.), Phoebe Clark (Concord, N.H.) and Emily Mongeau (Westborough, Mass.) of the women's lacrosse team, Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) and Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) of the softball team and Samantha Jean (Bedford, N.H.) of the women's tennis team were all honored.
SNHU had a total of 15 student-athletes named to their respective Academic All-Conference Teams in the 2011-12 academic year.
To be eligible for selection to the academic all-conference teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.
The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR).
Barton, who recently graduated with a degree in Business Administration, was the lone senior on a Penmen softball team that posted a school-record 28 victories and finished 28-19 overall. She garnered NE-10 Second Team All-Conference honors after starting all 47 games in the outfield and batting .329 with 23 runs scored and 10 runs batted in. Barton was also a Capital One Academic All-District selection.
Cheney, an NE-10 First Team selection in softball, started all 47 games at second base, batting .359 with a single-season school record 15 home runs to go along with 36 runs batted in. The junior Psychology major finished second in the Northeast-10 in home runs and ended the season on a career-best 12 game hit streak. In the field, Cheney committed just one error in 129 chances for a .992 fielding percentage.
Clark, a sophomore Business Administration major who garnered Capital One Academic All-District honors in 2012, was the third-leading scorer for the Penmen women's lacrosse program this season, totaling 26 goals and nine assists for 35 points. She appeared in 14 games, starting 13, and had a season-best four goals and an assist in a win over American International on April 21. In 2011 Clark was the NE-10's Rookie of the Year after tallying 36 goals and 10 assists.
Flight, who recently graduated as a Business Studies major, dominated on the mound for Southern New Hampshire this season. The ABCA and NCBWA Division II Pitcher of the Year, Flight finished first nationally in strikeouts (140), fifth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.08) and sixth in earned run average (1.29) while also finishing as runner-up for the Tino Martinez Award presented to the most outstanding player in Division II baseball. Flight, who finished with a 9-1 record, was recently drafted by the New York Yankees and is currently pitching for the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League. Flight was also a Capital One Third Team Academic All-American.
Jean, a recent SNHU graduate in Marketing, garnered NE-10 All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles play this season, earning Second Team honors in singles and Third Team accolades in doubles. She finished this season with a 14-10 singles mark and an 18-8 doubles mark as Jean helped the Penmen secure their third straight Northeast-10 regular season and tournament championships.
Mongeau, a recent graduate in Elementary Education, recently garnered Capital One First Team Academic All-America honors as well as being named the IWLCA Division II Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In 2012 she led the Penmen in virtually every statistical category for the second straight year, totaling 48 goals and 21 assists for 69 points in 14 games. Also the SNHU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Mongeau wrapped up her career as the women's lacrosse program's all-time leader in goals, points, draw controls and caused turnovers.
Spatkowski, who recently graduated with a Sport Management degree, was named a Capital One Third Team Academic All-American as well as an NE-10 Second Team All-Conference selection in 2012. One of the offensive leaders for the Penmen in 2012 splitting time between catcher and designated hitter, Spatkowski batted a team-high .319 while driving in 22 runs and scoring a team-high 49. A team co-captain, Spatkowski hit safely in each of SNHU's eight NCAA Tournament games.
