Women's Basketball Downed by Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Gabrielle Gibson totaled 18 of her 25 points in the second half to lead Assumption College to a 71-51 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.  The Greyhounds improve to 10-3 and 7-2 in the league with the win, while the Penmen are now 6-7 and 3-6 in the league.

Gibson knocked down three of her six three-point attempts and led a trio of Greyhounds in double figures.  Katy Howard recorded 18 points, while Sabrina Siciliano added 11 points for Assumption.

Southern New Hampshire was led by Deb LaValley (Rochester, N.H.) who totaled a career-high 13 points on 4-6 shooting.  Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) was 4-8 from the field and tallied 12 points, while Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) notched 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.

The two teams traded the lead six times with two ties in the first five minutes before a Caitlin Ackerman layup put Assumption up 10-9 at the 14:53 mark.  The Greyhounds opened up their largest lead, 35-21, with just under a minute left in the first half after back-to-back threes by Howard and Shannon Ray capped a 13-3 run.  Lavalley knocked down a three-pointer with 12 seconds left before intermission for SNHU, and the guests took a 37-27 lead into the locker room.

The Greyhounds opened the second half on a 7-2 spurt to up their lead to 15, 44-29, with 18:05 to play.  Southern New Hampshire held Assumption without a field goal for the next six minutes and outscored the guests 8-1 to pull within eight, 45-37, with 12:03 left on a fast-break layup by Sorrell.  The Greyhounds dashed hope of a Penmen comeback with a 9-2 run to take a 54-38 lead with 9:18 left on a Gibson layup.  Assumption maintained at least a 13-point cushion the rest of the way.

Assumption shot 51% for the game while limiting Southern New Hampshire to just 34.7% overall from the floor.  The Greyhounds also knocked down six of their 13 three-point attempts.  The Penmen outrebounded Assumption 34-28, but 23 SNHU turnovers led to a 25-11 lead for the guests in points off turnovers.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday evening when it hosts The College of Saint Rose in a 5:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
