CANTON, N.Y. – Four different players scored for the Southern New Hampshire ice hockey team in a 6-1 win over SUNY Canton in non-conference action Friday evening. The Penmen win their third straight to improve to 3-1, their best start since the 2007-08 season, while the Kangaroos fall to 1-3-1 on the season.
Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) and Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) connected for two goals apiece in the win, including a power play goal for each. Caracino also tallied an assist for SNHU, while Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) and Connor Audycki (Bellevue, Wash.) scored the other goals for the Penmen.
Collins was the first to put SNHU on the board with a late power play goal from Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) and Caracino. The sophomore scored at the 15:06 mark in the first period for his sixth tally of the season, and the visitors took the 1-0 lead into the second period.
The scoring continued in the second after Caracino scored on another Penmen power play for his first goal of the game. Collins and Goll assisted on the goal halfway through the period to give SNHU a 2-0 advantage. Sylvia matched Caracino's tally just three minutes later with his first collegiate goal from Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.). SNHU was able to hold a 3-0 lead over the Roos for the majority of the period, but a Canton power play goal from Dave Schneider put the hosts on the board and ended the frame with a 3-1 Penmen advantage.
The final period was all Penmen as Sylvia struck quickly just one minute into the third to score his second goal of the game from Collins and Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.). With a three-goal lead, Caracino netted his second score of the game from John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.), and Audycki capped off the win with his own goal a minute later from Zach Lubinski (Hudson, N.H.).
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) earned the win in the net for SNHU while turning away 15 shots, while Marsillo saved 13 shots in goal for SUNY Canton.
The Penmen and the Roos return to action tomorrow for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
