CANTON, N.Y. – Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal halfway through the third period to lead the Southern New Hampshire University hockey team to its fourth straight win over SUNY Canton by a score of 5-3 Saturday evening in non-conference play. The Penmen improve to 4-1, while the Kangaroos are now 1-4-1.
Caracino notched a goal and an assist in the win, while John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) added two goals, and Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) each added a goal.
The Roos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 18 seconds into the first period on a Lee Melde goal, but Humphrey quickly answered with an equalizer 32 seconds later from Caracino for his first goal of the game. SUNY Canton took the lead once again on a Kristin Leach goal, but Gabrione tied it up at 2-2 with a power play score for his fourth goal of the season. However, the Roos scored with just five minutes left in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the second frame.
After a scoreless second period, the Penmen owned the final frame scoring three more goals. Humphrey notched his second of the game 30 seconds into the third from Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) to tie the game at 3-3. Caracino then connected with the net for the game-winning tally from Collins and Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) to take a 4-3 lead over the Roos. Sylvia scored his third goal of the season to secure the win at 5-3, and lead the Penmen to its fourth straight victory.
