MANCHESTER, N.H. – Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal on a Penmen power play with 50 seconds remaining in the third period to boost the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team past Plymouth State University by a score of 4-3 Saturday evening in non-conference action. The Penmen improve to 2-1 overall, while the Panthers fall to 1-2.

Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) notched his fourth goal of the season from John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) and Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.)  six minutes into the first period to put the Penmen on the board and give them a quick 1-0 lead. The hosts outshot Plymouth 11-8 in the first frame, and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

The second period brought more scoring for the Penmen, but not before Dan Dupell connected on a power-play goal for the Panthers to tie the game up at one goal apiece at the 13:19 mark. But, SNHU answered back when Caracino netted his own power-play goal from Gabrione and Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) just one minute later to regain the lead at 2-1. Collins scored his second tally of the game with 34 seconds remaining in the period to boost the hosts' lead to 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Plymouth jumped out of the gates firing in the third, and was able to score quickly on a Zach Sarig goal 3:23 into the period to cut the deficit to one goal. The Panthers were not going down without a fight, and four minutes later Ian McGilvrey scored the equalizer to knot the game up at 3-3.

The momentum seemed to be in Plymouth's favor until Mike Economos was sent to the penalty box with 1:47 remaining in regulation for a tripping call. The Penmen then called a timeout to regroup, and a minute later, Gabrione was able to find the net from Caracino, and score the game-winner with 50 seconds left on the clock to give SNHU a one-goal advantage at 4-3. Plymouth fired off four shots in the last seconds, but goalie Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) stood his ground in net for SNHU, and the Penmen won in thriller fashion.

Holske turned away 30 shots en route to the win, while Panther's goalie Tyler Ingerson saved 27. The Penmen were outshot by Plymouth 33-30, but were able to convert two out of four power-play opportunities.

The Penmen return to action Friday, November 15, and Saturday, November 16 when they travel to SUNY Canton for two games. The team returns home on Saturday, November 23 for a conference game against Assumption at 7:30 p.m.
