Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Shannon Ray totaled 17 points to lead Assumption College to a 69-62 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Laska Gymnasium Tuesday night.  The Greyhounds improve to 6-4 and 3-4 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Penmen are now 5-4 and 3-3 in the league.

Ray also grabbed eight rebounds and led three Assumption players in double figures.  Tafanie Roye finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jamie Insel added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire was led by sophomore Amra Elezovic (Manchester, N.H.), who tallied 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half.  She narrowly missed a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds.  Classmate Bianca Langford (Worcester, Mass.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) added 11 points on 5-9 shooting.  Junior Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) registered 10 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.

Assumption led wire-to-wire and jumped out to a 17-1 lead five and a half minutes into the game.  The Greyhounds took their largest lead, 29-8, with just under 11 minutes to go in the first half on a Caitlin Ackerman layup.  A 14-5 Penmen run capped by a basket by Elezovic with 5:41 left in the frame cut the lead to 12, 34-22.  Following a pair of Ray free throws at the 4:22 mark, the guests closed the half on a 10-1 run and trailed by just five, 37-32, at intermission.

The Greyhounds built a 45-34 lead five minutes into the second half, but six straight points by Elezovic capped by a three-point play at the 13:14 mark made it 45-40.  Assumption gradually pulled away and opened up a 57-46 lead with just over six minutes left on a Morgan O'Brien layup.

Southern New Hampshire outscored Assumption 16-8 over the next five and a half minutes and pulled within three, 65-62, with 31 seconds left on an Elezovic basket.  After Ray made 1-of-2 at the line, the Penmen came up empty on their next trip and Assumption made three of its final four free throw attempts to seal the win.

Assumption took 18 more trips to the free throw line than Southern New Hampshire, going 23-39 while the Penmen were 14-21 at the charity stripe.  Neither team shot the ball well (Assumption 35.6%, SNHU 33.3%) and the guests were just 2-15 behind the arc while the Greyhounds went 4-13 from long range.  Southern New Hampshire held a 52-46 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it hosts Merrimack College for a 1:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  Fans who bring non-perishable food items for New Horizons or a new unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots will receive free admission for the league doubleheader against the Warriors.
