MANCHESTER, N.H. –Three members of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team have been chosen to participate in the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star Game on Monday, June 3 at 7:00 pm at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass. Senior starting pitcher Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.), junior starting pitcher Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) and graduate student outfielder Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) were all selected to the game. A team of Division II and III all-stars will take on a team comprised of players from Division I institutions in New England.
Massad was an ABCA Second Team All-Region and Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference selection in 2013. He currently ranks fourth in the Northeast-10 with a 1.46 earned run average and finished 6-3 in 11 starts while striking out 57 batters against 14 walks. He ranks ninth nationally in ERA and has held opponents to a .196 batting average this season. In his 2013 debut on February 22 against Chestnut Hill, Massad came within one out of a perfect game, retiring the game's first 26 batters before a runner reached on an error, and Massad finished with a no-hitter.
Mendez, a consensus First Team All-Region selection along with an NE-10 First Team choice, emerged as one of the most dominant pitchers in Division II this season. In 14 appearances (13 starts), Mendez compiled a 1.67 earned run average and 9-3 record while striking out 133 batters in 97.0 innings while walking just 17. He leads the Northeast-10 and Division II in strikeouts and has struck out at least 10 batters seven times, including a career-best 15 batters in a no-hitter against University of the Sciences on March 3.
Pezzuto, like Mendez, was a consensus First Team All-Region selection and also garnered Honorable Mention All-America accolades from Daktronics. He led SNHU and ranked second in the Northeast-10 with his .365 batting average, scoring 45 runs while driving in 31 batting in the No. 2 spot. Including his 35 walks, Pezzuto posted a .471 on-base percentage, also good for second in the league. On the basepaths, he established, along with teammate Brendan O'Brien, a program single-season stolen base record with 40, going 40-53, with his 40 steals leading the NE-10 along with O'Brien and ranking fifth nationally.
Southern New Hampshire qualified for and hosted the NCAA East Regional for the second straight season in 2013, finishing 35-19 overall.
