Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – Three third period goals were the difference as the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina by a score of 4-3 in non-conference action Saturday evening. The Penmen improve to 11-5-1, while the Seahawks are now 6-10-0.
Four different Penmen notched goals in the win, including co-captain Nick Riccio (Wilmington, Mass.), who scored his first goal of the year. Anthony Laperriere (Winchendon, Mass.), Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.), and Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.) also scored in the win.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead after the first period, and built on the lead early in the second to go up two goals on SNHU. However, Riccio answered with a goal at the 13:51 mark from Laperriere to cut the deficit to one. Not long after, Marc Biggs scored for Salve on a power play goal to regain the two goal advantage, and end the period.
The Penmen entered the third period trailing the Seahawks by a score of 3-1. Laperriere got the scoring going when he tallied his third goal on the season at the 4:13 mark, followed by Berry, who scored the equalizer less than a minute later, at the 5:40 mark to tie the game at 3-3. Nelson then scored the game winner five minutes later, to give the Penmen their first lead of the game, and to get the win.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass) earned the win in net while saving 25 shots, including 13 in the third period. Frankie McCormick saved 36 shots for the Seahawks.
The Penmen return to action on Tuesday, January 21, when they host Franklin Pierce for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
