Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Jim O'Connor (Alrington, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 2:36 into the overtime period to lift the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Tufts University Saturday evening at the 49th Annual Codfish Bowl, hosted by UMass Boston. With the win, SNHU improves to 8-4-1 overall, while Tufts falls to 2-8-0.
Four different Penmen notched goals in the win, while Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) tallied two scores.
Despite trailing after the first period by a score of 2-1, the Penmen were able to outscore the Jumbos in the second period 2-1 to take control of the game.
Tufts built a two-goal lead (3-1) in the second period after Keith Campbell power play goal, but Collins quickly answered three minutes later with his 13th tally on the season to cut the deficit to one. Classmate Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) then answered with a goal of his own and the equalizer with just over five minutes to play in the period.
The Penmen took their first lead of the game when Collins scored his second goal on a power play. SNHU held a 4-3 advantage over Tufts halfway through the third period, but Blake Edwards scored the game-tying goal for Tufts to force overtime.
O'Connor notched the game-winner, and his third goal of the season from Anthony Laperriere (Winchendon, Mass.) more than halfway through the overtime period to give SNHU the win.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) saved 33 shots in goal for SNHU, while Ryan Kellenberger also turned away 33 for the Jumbos.
The Penmen return to action tomorrow when they play in the Codfish Bowl championship game against UMass Boston for a 4:00 puck-drop.
