Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team fell by a score of 6-2 to UMass Boston in the championship game of the Codfish Bowl Sunday afternoon. The Beacons, who won the tournament last season, improve to 9-1-2, while the Penmen are now 8-5-1.
Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) and Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) both scored for the Penmen to get them on the board, but the goals came too late as UMass Boston built an early 5-0 lead.
The Beacons scored three first period goals and one second period goal to take a 4-0 lead into the third period.
UMass Boston took its largest lead of the game (5-0) when Derek Colucci scored 7:44 into the third. However, the Penmen answered with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to three. Caracino notched a power-play goal to get the Penmen on the board first at the 9:26 mark in the period, while Berry followed Caracino for the second SNHU goal three minutes later to make it 5-2. But, the Beacons quickly scored once more to regain their four-goal lead and win the game.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) turned away 36 shots for SNHU in net, while Zach Andrews saved 35 en route to the win for UMass Boston.
Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) and Jim O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) both earned All-Tournament Team honors for the Penmen. Collins scored two goals in the overtime win over Tufts last night, along with two assists today, while O'Connor notched last night's game-winner in overtime to put the Penmen in the championship game.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday, January 7 when they host Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
