NORTHEAST-10 RELEASE
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis coach Greg Coache was named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year as the league released its women's tennis All-Conference teams Wednesday morning. The Penmen had a total of seven All-Conference selections.
Junior Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) was a First Team selection at No. 2 singles, while graduate student Sarah Schöllgen (Meerbusch, Germany) and freshman Lindsay Baum (North Salem, N.Y.) were Second Team selections at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively. The doubles tandem of Schöllgen and Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) were also Second Team selections at No. 2 doubles. Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) was a Third Team selection at No. 1 singles, while Vamvakitis and Loft were Third Team doubles performers at No. 1. Finally, Baum was named to the league's All-Rookie Team.
Coache was named Coach of the Year on the women's side for the fourth time in his eight seasons, as he also received the honor in 2010, 2012 and 2013. He is also a two-time NE-10 Coach of the Year on the men's side. After an uncharacteristic 2013-14 campaign which saw the Penmen finish fifth in the conference standings, Coache guided SNHU to an 11-1 record and the No. 2 seed in the NE-10 Championship. In eight seasons as head coach of the women's program, Coache has compiled a 117-40 (.745) career record.
Loft, a one-time Northeast-10 Player of the Week this fall, finished with a perfect 11-0 mark playing at the No. 2 singles position in her first season with the Penmen program. She opened the conference season with three-set victories over Shakee Messina of Merrimack College and Charlotte Moreau of Adelphi before registering nine straight two set triumphs.
Schöllgen, who missed three matches in the middle of the season, wrapped up conference play with a 7-2 mark, including a 6-2 record at No. 3 singles. After dropping her first two singles matches of the season, Schöllgen won seven straight matches in two-set victories.
Baum has been impressive to date in her rookie season, winning nine straight matches to open the season before falling in the final regular season match of the fall against Stonehill College. She did not drop a game in four of her nine victories.
Schöllgen and Hann combined to record a 6-1 doubles record at No. 2. The pair has won six straight matches after dropping their first match of the season against Adelphi.
Vamvakitis has won nine straight singles matches after starting 0-2 to post a 9-2 record at No. 1 singles. A four-time NE-10 All-Conference performer in singles, she has posted 71 singles victories over her career, good for third in program history, and within striking distance of the program record of 76.
Vamvakitis and Loft recorded a 9-1 record at No. 1 doubles this season and enter the NE-10 tournament as winners of nine straight. The duo also reached the quarterfinals of the A doubles draw at the ITA East Regional.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Friday when it hosts Stonehill College in a 2:00 Northeast-10 semifinal. In the event of inclement weather, the match will be held indoors at the YMCA Allard Center in Goffstown at 5:30 pm.
