Box Score HOOKSETT, N.H. — Led by sophomore Jay Sylvia's (Acushnet, Mass.) three-point night, the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team picked up an 8-2 win over Daniel Webster College at the Ice Den on Friday night.
The Penmen opened up the scoring just over six minutes into the first period, as junior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) found the back of the net for his first of the evening. Southern New Hampshire doubled its lead 1:34 later when junior Jim O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) took a feed from senior Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) to give the Penmen a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
After seeing Daniel Webster cut the lead in half to start the second, the Penmen reeled off four-straight goals to take control of the contest. Gabrione started the run with his second of the contest with help from Sylvia and junior Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) with 9:53 remaining. Collins won a battle for the puck in the corner before sliding a pass to Sylvia behind the net. Sylvia then fed a cutting Gabrione, who one-timed a shot low and to the glove side of Morgan Hudson to reestablish a two-goal lead.
Freshman Kevin Lorcher (Rouen, France) increased the Penmen lead to 4-1 just over two minutes later with a powerplay goal before senior Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) picked up a drop pass from Sylvia and pushed a shot through traffic that gave Southern New Hampshire a comfortable 5-1 edge. Freshman Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) capped the second period scoring with 4:47 to play when he picked up a loose puck and rifled it past Hudson to make it 6-1 at intermission. Lorcher and Valliere each tallied goals in the third period before Daniel Webster picked up a late goal to make it an 8-2 final.
Sylvia led the way for Southern New Hampshire with three assists, while Gabrione, Lorcher and Valliere each scored two goals. Berry, junior Anthony Laperriere (Winchendon, Mass.) and senior John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) also recorded two-point nights as they notched a pair of assists. Freshman Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) registered 16 saves between the Penmen piped to earn the victory, while Hudson turned aside 33 shots in the setback for the Eagles.
Southern New Hampshire returns to the ice on Tuesday when it resumes Northeast-10 Conference play on the road against Stonehill College at 7 p.m. Daniel Webster is back in action on Saturday when it hosts the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
