Women's Basketball Holds Off Felician

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) and Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) each finished with double-doubles as Southern New Hampshire University held off Felician College for a 66-57 women's basketball victory Friday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The game marked the season opener for both schools.

Wiseman, who returned to the Penmen lineup after a year off, finished with 19 points on 6-7 shooting off the bench while also grabbing 10 rebounds, finishing two points shy of her career high in the scoring column.  Griffin, a senior, tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds on 5-7 shooting, while Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) also added 11 points.  Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) contributed nine points, while Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) dished out six assists.

Felician was led by Eliana Scanlon with a game-high 20 points, while Ashley Morris finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire appeared poised to put the game away early, opening up a 17-2 lead just over six minutes into the game following a Rocha basket.  The Golden Falcons cut the lead to nine twice, but a 12-2 run capped by baskets by Griffin and Wiseman made it 33-14 with 4:40 left before halftime.  SNHU took a 37-22 lead into the locker room.

Felician chipped away at the lead, and a Scanlon basket with 9:12 remaining made it a 47-37 lead for the hosts.  A quick 5-0 burst capped by a layup by freshman Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) made it 52-37 with 8:06 to go.  The guests countered with a 10-3 spurt, and Morris' layup with 4:44 to go pulled Felician within eight, 55-47.  The Golden Falcons made one final run, cutting the lead to five with just under a minute left, but got no closer.

Southern New Hampshire shot 60% in the first half and 48.1% for the game while limiting Felician to 30.8% shooting for the contest.  The Penmen held a 45-38 rebounding advantage, while the Golden Falcons went 16-20 at the free throw line, while the Penmen were just 12-22 at the charity stripe.

SNHU returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Wilmington (Del.) University for a 1:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
