Holy Family Shoots Past Men's Basketball

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Xavier Williams went 6-9 from three-point land and totaled 22 points as Holy Family University rallied past Southern New Hampshire University for a 74-69 men's basketball victory Sunday afternoon.  The Tigers improve to 4-1 with the victory, while the Penmen now stand 3-2.

Williams scored 14 of his points over the final 20 minutes to lead three Holy Family players in double figures.  Marvin Crawford finished with 19 points, while Reggie Charles added 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire was led by BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) who scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half as the Penmen built a 40-34 halftime lead.  Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) tallied 13 points, while Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) flirted with a triple-double, registering 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.  Adrian Oliveira (Pawtucket, R.I.) made all three of his field goal attempts and added nine points.

The Penmen led 52-36 with 14:30 to go following a Sanders layup, but a 12-2 run capped by a Charles basket pulled the hosts within six, 54-48, with 9:40 to go.  Holy Family took its first lead since the game's opening moments on a Williams three with 2:50 remaining, but Dobrovic responded with a pair of free throws to give SNHU a 66-65 lead with 2:24 left.

Isaiah Gans knocked down a three to give the Tigers a 68-66 lead, but the Penmen went back on top, 69-68, with Phillip Tripodakis (Athens, Greece) knocked down a trifecta with a minute to go.  The lead was short-lived, as a Williams triple on the next Holy Family possession gave it a 71-69 lead with 49 seconds left.  After a Cardarelli look at a three was off the mark, the hosts made it a two-possession game on a Williams basket with 16 seconds left.

SNHU opened a 17-7 lead seven minutes into the game following a Tripodakis three and opened up its largest lead, 30-13, with just over six minutes before halftime on a Cardarelli basket.  Holy Family closed the frame on a 13-3 run and trailed 40-34 at the break.

Holy Family shot 51.9% over the final 20 minutes and knocked down seven of its 16 three-point attempts in the second half while shooting 47.2% for the game.  The Penmen shot 48.1% for the contest and knocked down eight of their 19 three-point attempts, whereas the hosts were 11-31 behind the arc for the game, but SNHU was 11-18 at the free throw line while HFU went 13-19.  The Penmen outrebounded the Tigers 33-26, but were undone by 22 turnovers.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Franklin Pierce University for a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
