Box Score HOOKSETT, N.H. — Freshman Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) tallied two goals, but the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team suffered a 5-2 setback against SUNY Cortland in the 2014 Manchester Police Athletic League (PAL) Stovepipe Hockey Tournament championship on Sunday. The Penmen move to 3-4 on the season, while the Red Dragons improve to 4-5-1.
Southern New Hampshire grabbed the lead early in the first period, as Valliere recorded his second goal in as many nights. Freshman Kevin Lorcher (Rouen, France) picked up the puck on the right side of the neutral zone and lofted a cross-ice saucer pass to Valliere at the SUNY Cortland blue line. Valiere gloved the puck, settled it and walked in to the top of the left face-off circle before rifling a wrist shot high to the glove side to make it 1-0 Penmen with 6:03 to play in the period.
The Red Dragons responded in the second stanza by scoring three consecutive goals in the first eight minutes. Andrew McCann opened up the period with a shorthanded goal just 1:32 in before Dan Broderick converted a powerplay opportunity less than a minute later to put SUNY Cortland ahead, 2-1. Casie Garrison gave the visitors a two-goal cushion with 12:06 left in the middle frame off assists from Kevin Antonik and McCann.
Valliere finally stopped the run with 5:48 left in the period when he struck for his second tally of the game. Senior Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) retrieved the puck at his own blue line and sent a breakaway pass to Valliere behind the SUNY Cortland defense. The rookie did the rest, as he put one above the blocker of Drew Weigman to make it 3-2. Nick Zappia regained the two-goal advantage for SUNY Cortland when he scored off a feed from Kevin Broderick to close out the second, and Mike Mascaro's goal midway through the third provided the Red Dragons with the final margin of victory.
SUNY Cortland was led on offense by McCann and Broderick, who each picked up a goal and an assist in the victory. Antonik and Kevin Wagner also chipped in with two points as they each assisted on a pair of goals. Weigman was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after he registered 26 saves in the final and 43 saves in the Red Dragons' semifinal victory on Saturday. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Broderick and Wagner.
Freshman Matthew MacInnis (Arlington, Texas) turned aside 30 shots in goal for the Penmen, and Valliere picked up all-tournament accolades after scoring twice in the final and once in Southern New Hampshire's semifinal victory over Fitchburg State University.
The Penmen return to action on Tuesday when they host Franklin Pierce University at 7:30 p.m. in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. SUNY Cortland will take to the ice on Friday when it travels to SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC tilt with the Bears at 7 p.m.
