Gabrione Lifts Penmen to 6-5 Victory in Third Period

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the third period to lift the Southern New Hampshire ice hockey team past Assumption College by a score of 6-5 Sunday evening in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. With the win, the Penmen improve to 14-8-1 overall and 6-4 in league play, while the Greyhounds fall to 4-18-2 and 0-9-1 in the conference.

Gabrione was not the only Penmen to record multiple goals. Rookie Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) also scored twice in the second period to add to the goal total. Besides Gabrione and Sylvia, two other Penmen players got on the board in the win.

In the first period, SNHU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 1:47 in when Zach Lubinski (Hudson, N.H.) scored his fourth goal of the season from Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.). However, Assumption answered fiercely scoring the next three goals of the period to take a 3-1 lead into the second.

The Penmen dominated the second frame scoring four goals, including one power play score, and two short-handed tallies. Gabrione got the scoring going when he connected on a puck from Sylvia and Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) to cut the two goal deficit to just one at 3-2. 1:35 later, Sylvia scored his first goal of the period on a power play opportunity to tie the game from McTiernan and Collins. The Greyhounds matched Sylvia's goal nine seconds later at the 8:52 mark to take back the lead, but the Penmen scored a pair of short-handed goals to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. But, with 51 seconds remaining in the second, Assumption answered once again with a power play goal from Paul Amarone to tie it back up at 5-5 to end the period.

Gabrione notched the game-winner at the 13:45 mark in the final period to give SNHU the win. McTiernan notched his third helper of the game on the goal, along with Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.).

Max Paluszynski (Moorestown, N.J.) got his first start of the season in net for the Penmen, as he made 14 saves en route to the win. Bobby Bowden totaled 39 saves for the Greyhounds. Overall, SNHU outshot Assumption 45-19, and was one for six on the power play.

The Penmen return to action on Wednesday, February 19 when they travel to Franklin Pierce for their last regular season game at 7:00 PM.
