Box Score WINCHENDON, Mass. – Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) scored the game winning goal on a power play as time expired in the third period to push the Southern New Hampshire ice hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Franklin Pierce Wednesday night in Northeast-10 action. The Penmen close out the regular season with a 15-8-1 overall record, and 7-4-0 in the league, while the Ravens fall to 4-17-3 and 2-5-1 in conference play.
Sylvia's goal came at the 19:59 mark in the third period, just minutes after Nick Riccio (Wilmington, Mass.) scored on another power play opportunity at the 17:34 mark. Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) sparked the power play scoring in the third when he tallied the first Penmen goal halfway through the frame tying up the game at 3-3. Ted Walsh followed Gabrione's goal to retake a 4-3 lead, but Riccio and Sylvia then secured the win with the man-up advantage.
The Ravens took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, and held off the Penmen to take the two-goal advantage into the second.
SNHU dominated the game from there, scoring the next five-out-of-seven goals, including two in the second period, and the three power play goals in the third.
Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) got on the board first for the visitors when he scored 58 seconds into the second from Sylvia to cut the deficit to one goal. Despite a Ravens score to take back the two-goal lead at the 6:00 mark, Gabrione answered with his first goal of the game from Sylvia to spark the scoring, and to cut the hosts lead to 3-2 heading into the final period.
Three power play goals in the third period pushed SNHU to victory for the third time over the Ravens this season.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded 18 saves in 59:55 of play, while Dave O'Brien had 31 saves. The Penmen outshot the Ravens 36-22 overall, and connected on three-out-of-seven power plays.
SNHU returns to action on Saturday, February 22 when it travels to Saint Anselm College for the first round of the Northeast-10 Championship. The Penmen earned the third seed, while the Hawks will be the second seed. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM.
