Greyhounds Pull Away From Penmen in Women's Hoop Finale

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Kelly Carey totaled 17 points off the bench to lead Assumption College to a 74-51 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the SNHU Fieldhouse Tuesday evening.  The Greyhounds upped their record to 17-9 and 13-8 in the NE-10, while the Penmen see their season come to a close at 7-19 and 5-16 in league play.

Carey finished 5-7 from three-point land and led three Greyhounds in double figures.  Tafanie Roye knocked down four three pointers and finished with 16 points, while Caitlin Ackerman added 11 points.  Shannon Ray recorded nine points and seven assists for Assumption.

Sophomore Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with 19 points on 8-15 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds.  Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points, while Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) registered seven points and five rebounds.

Assumption held a 16-11 lead midway through the first half before a 7-2 Penmen spurt capped by a basket by Kelly Chergey (Bow, N.H.) at the 6:02 mark tied the game 18-18.  The Greyhounds countered with eight straight points of their own to take a 26-18 on a conventional three-point play by Ackerman 2:22 before intermission.  The guests carried a 29-23 lead into the locker room.

The Greyhounds clung to a 37-33 lead 5:36 into the second half before scoring 11 straight points to open up a 48-33 advantage with 11:44 to go on a Ray three-pointer, capping a string of seven straight points for the senior.  The Greyhounds maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game and leading by as many as 26 points down the stretch.

Assumption shot 10-25 (40%) from three-point land and 42.9% for the contest while limiting the Penmen to 36.4% shooting for the game.  The Greyhounds held a 38-36 rebounding advantage and turned 20 SNHU turnovers into a 25-7 lead in points off turnovers for the game.

Prior to the game, the Penmen honored seniors Chergey and Emily O'Callaghan (Cork, Ireland) who played in their final collegiate contest Tuesday evening.
