Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team fell to Bentley University on the road Friday, 8-0. The Penmen move to 1-4, while the Falcons improve to 2-3.
Freshman Eva Michaliszyn (Media, Pa.) led the Bentley offense with two goals and an assist. Junior Leah Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) added a pair of goals in the victory, while senior Gina Lirange (Auburn, Mass.), sophomore Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J.), and junior Becca Moore (Belmont, Mass.) each chipped in with a goal and assist.
Junior Cassandra Nickerson (Newton, N.H.) played all 70 minutes in goal for SNHU and registered a career-high 13 saves.
Lirange broke through less than 10 minutes into the first half, blasting a shot from about eight yards out to put Bentley ahead 1-0. Midway through the opening 35 minutes, Winer pushed the Falcon lead to two when she deflected a Lirange shot to the back of the cage.
Michaliszyn converted a pair of opportunities late in the half to give Bentley a 4-0 lead. With 12:12 remaining before intermission, Michaliszyn corralled a rebound in tight and connected on her first goal of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, Michaliszyn took a centering feed from junior Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Mass.) and flicked a shot to the top netting to give the Falcons a four-goal edge. Junior Sally James (Mequon, Wisc.) closed out the scoring for Bentley in the first half with 1:16 left to play, tallying her first of the year off an assist from Michaliszyn and putting Bentley ahead, 5-0.
Moore started the second half scoring 5:23 into the stanza when she turned a rebound into her third goal of the 2014 campaign. With 11:43 to go in regulation, Moore helped give the Falcons a 7-0 edge when, off a penalty corner, she set up Ellis for her first of the season. Winer capped off the scoring five minutes later when she deflected an Ellis blast for her second strike of the year and an 8-0 final.
Sophomore Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt.) turned aside three shots in the victory. Bentley outshot the Penmen 33-5 on the evening and also held an 18-1 edge in penalty corners.
Southern New Hampshire will look to end its current four-game slide on September 30, when it welcomes Merrimack College to Larkin Field at 4 p.m. for the Penmen's final tune-up before Northeast-10 play begins. Bentley also returns to action on September 30 as it plays host to Saint Michael's College at 6 p.m.
