MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Cassandra Nickerson (Newton, N.H.) registered 32 saves, but the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team suffered an 8-0 loss to No. 9 Merrimack College at Larkin Field on Tuesday. The Penmen fall to 1-5 on the season, while the Warriors improve to 5-2.
Nickerson's save total was the 10th-highest single game total in the history of NCAA Division II Field Hockey. She stopped 20 shots in the first half of play before turning aside 12 more in the game's final 35 minutes.
Seven different Warriors found the back of the cage, led by junior Sydney Bowker (Schenectady, N.Y), who tallied a pair of goals and added an assist. Freshman Rylee Hammond (Phillipston, Mass.) recorded a goal and two assists for Merrimack, and senior Katie Bishop (Conway, N.H.) and sophomore Nicole Bradley (Essex, Mass.) each chipped in with a goal and an assist. Junior Madison Davis (San Jose, Calif.) and senior Gina Rosinski (Derry, N.H.) combined for the shutout in the Warriors' goal, each playing a half in the victory.
Merrimack jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime before adding five goals in the second stanza.
With her 32-save performance on Tuesday, Nickerson has now recorded at least 11 saves in three of Southern New Hampshire's last four games.
The Penmen open up Northeast-10 Conference play in their next outing on Saturday at Stonehill College. The Warriors also return to action on Saturday when they travel to Adelphi University for an NE-10 showdown with the Panthers.
