Box Score MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Senior Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) and junior Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) each registered five points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to an 8-1 victory over Becker College at the New England Sports Center on Friday night. The Penmen up their record to 5-5 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 3-9.
Junior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) opened up the scoring late in the first period when he converted a powerplay opportunity with 4:30 left to play. Gabrione's seventh of the season was set up by Collins and Caracino.
After Connor Merrick knotted the score for Becker just 3:29 into the second, the Penmen exploded for four goals in the period to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Caracino regained the one-goal advantage for Southern New Hampshire 15 seconds after the Hawks' equalizer when he blasted a slapshot home with help from Collins and senior Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.). Senior John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) made it a 3-1 lead eight minutes later when he connected on a one-timer from Collins and Caracino. Freshman Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) tallied his second shorthanded goal of the season off a feed from TJ Bond (Nashua, N.H.) with 7:24 left in the middle period before Humphrey extended the edge to 5-1 with his second of the stanza.
The Penmen pushed their lead to five 3:36 into the third when Caracino potted his second of the night from Collins and Humphrey. Just under 10 minutes later, sophomore Nathan Bergeron (Auburn, Maine) added his second of the season after converting a 2-on-1 with Gabrione. Collins capped the scoring with 5:22 left in regulation, as he took a feed from Caracino and lit the lamp.
Collins finished with a goal and four assists, while Caracino added two goals and dished out a trio of helpers to lead the Southern New Hampshire offense. Humphrey chipped in with three points on two goals and an assist, and freshman Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) turned aside 25 shots to pick up his second win in as many starts. Gregg Hussey and Eric Sugrue combined for 32 saves in the setback for the Hawks.
The Penmen continue their six-game road trip on Monday when they travel to New York for a 7 p.m. face-off with the College at Brockport. Becker returns to action on Sunday when it hosts SUNY Canton at 4:50 p.m.
