MANCHESTER, N.H. – Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) led four Southern New Hampshire University players in double figures with 20 points as the Penmen held off Adelphi University for an 80-68 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory Wednesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen won their fourth straight to improve to 11-5 and stay on top of the Northeast Division with a 9-3 league mark. The Panthers fall to 4-13 and 1-10 in the league.
Sanders finished 6-11 from the floor and made all six of his free throw attempts en route to his eighth 20-point outing of the season. Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) recorded a season-high 15 points to go along with nine rebounds, while Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) added 10 points. Devin Gilligan (Amherst, N.H.) contributed 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Duane Morgan led Adelphi with 19 points on 7-10 shooting, while Damon Coleman and Anthony Libroia finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Southern New Hampshire trailed 34-32 at halftime and 43-41 3:32 into the second half when it reeled off 14 straight points, and a Sanders three with 13:04 to play gave the Penmen a 55-43 lead. SNHU took its largest lead, 66-50, with just under nine minutes left on a Dobrovic layup.
Adelphi held the Penmen without a field goal for the next five-plus minutes and a 14-3 run capped by a pair of Libroia free throws with 3:24 left pulled the Panthers within five, 69-64. The hosts got a Gilligan basket at the 2:09 mark and a Bonsignore layup with 1:20 to play to push the lead back to nine, and the Penmen went 7-8 at the free throw line in the final minute to secure the victory.
The first half saw two ties and 11 lead changes, with the Panthers eking out a 27-21 lead with 7:26 to play after a Justin Jenkins three capped an 11-4 spurt. SNHU cut the lead to one twice, the last on a Dobrovic basket with 3:55 to go, but couldn't get over the hump and trailed by two, 34-32, at intermission.
SNHU shot 57.7% in the second half and 47.3% for the game, while Adelphi shot 52.2% in the first stanza and 48% for the contest. The Panthers were 7-20 behind the arc, while the Penmen went 7-26, but the hosts took nine more free throws, going 21-24 while Adelphi was 13-15 at the line. Southern New Hampshire outrebounded Adelphi 35-23, including a 12-5 advantage on the offensive glass that led to a 14-4 lead in second-chance points.
Southern New Hampshire is back in action Saturday when it travels to Le Moyne College for a 2:00 tipoff.
