The Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action at Larkin Field on Saturday. The Penmen are now 8-3-2 overall and 6-2-2 in the NE-10, and the Chargers move to 7-4-3 and 4-4-3 in the league.
Sophomore Paige Salmon (West Hempstead, N.Y.) earned the clean sheet in the Southern New Hampshire goal with three saves while her counterpart, Deandra Nash, stopped seven Penmen shots in the double-overtime contest.
Despite being held without a goal, Southern New Hampshire was able to generate a number of scoring opportunities throughout the duration of the game. With 11:20 remaining in the first half, freshman Miranda Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.) drilled a hard cross from the top of the box to the back post that narrowly missed connecting with sophomore Sydney Crema (Litchfield, N.H.).
Just over 13 minutes into the second, freshman Danielle Humphreys (Hebron, Conn.) hit the crossbar on what was the best Penmen chance up to that point. Humphreys settled the ball in the box before turning and volleying a shot that sailed just high and ricocheted out of harms way.
In the first overtime period, sophomore Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass.) weaved through three New Haven defenders before sliding a pass over to Humphreys just outside the box. Humphreys one-touched an arcing shot attempt over the outstretched arms of Nash that clanged the crossbar and careened out of play with 1:16 to go.
Southern New Hampshire's finest opportunity came in the closing seconds of the first overtime. Luis crashed into the box on a crossing effort with two seconds remaining, but her sliding shot sailed high of the goal and the teams would remain scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Notes:
- Salmon earned her third shutout in six games this season, and upped her save-percentage to .914.
- The Penmen held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks, which included a 3-0 edge in the extra sessions.
- Southern New Hampshire outshot the Chargers by a 12-6 margin and placed seven of those attempts on frame.
