Senior Sebastian Stezewski (New Britain, Conn.) and graduate student Sofiane Tergou (Bitche, France) each tallied two points to lead the fourth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team to a 3-0 Senior Night triumph against Southern Connecticut State University on Friday night at Larkin Field.
The majority of the first half went back and forth, with neither team having many dangerous chances to score. The Penmen had a decent opportunity with just over 11 minutes remaining when Tergou's direct kick from 25 yards out sailed just over the crossbar.
Southern New Hampshire broke through with 8:01 on the clock in the opening stanza as Stezewski's shot from the right of the box deflected off the foot of a defender and on net where Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Ansbito Basquin was forced to make a diving save. The rebound caromed straight out to the middle of the box, however, and junior Michael Rowley (Cooperstown, N.Y.) popped it into the open net to make it 1-0.
The game went to halftime that way, with Rowley nearly making it 2-0 about three-and-a-half minutes into the second half, but his shot rocketed off the post.
Stezewski finally doubled the Penmen lead late in the 55th minute as Tergou dropped a pass across the box from right to left that Stezewski threaded between Basquin and the left post.
Tergou set up the game's final goal in the 77th minute with a thru-ball that connected to the foot of freshman Claude Diesse (Brossard, Quebec), who finished from 15 yards out.
Senior Myles Groenloh (Gevelsberg, Germany) making just his second ever start on Senior Night, earned the first decision of his career by turning away the only shot he faced in the first half. Senior Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) did not need to make a stop over the final 45 minutes for the Penmen, while Basquin recorded five saves for the Owls.
SNHU outshot Southern Connecticut, 20-5, including 11-2 in the opening half. The Penmen also held a narrow 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
