Box Score HOOKSETT, N.H. – In a game that took two days and two venues to complete, the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team suffered a 4-2 setback against Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday evening. The Penmen move to 9-10-1 overall and 3-6 in league play, while the Hawks improve to 7-12-2 and 2-1-1 in the NE-10.
The game began on Tuesday, but a burst pipe at the Ice Den forced the suspension of play with 6:17 remaining in regulation. The contest was then moved to the Thomas Sullivan Arena, where it was completed on Wednesday.
Saint Anselm also picked up two points on Southern New Hampshire in the inaugural Queen City Cup, a yearlong competition between the intracity rivals. The Penmen now hold a 15-7 advantage over the Hawks.
Southern New Hampshire opened up the scoring 10:29 into the first period when senior TJ Bond (Nashua, N.H.) converted a shorthanded opportunity for his first goal of the season. Freshman Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) carried the puck into the Saint Anselm zone before firing a shot from the leftwing faceoff circle. His shot careened off the post, and Bond crashed the net to push the puck over the goal line to give the Penmen a 1-0 lead.
After Ryan Donovan evened the score at a goal apiece with a powerplay tally at 16:41, senior Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) put Southern New Hampshire ahead back on top with his sixth of the season. The play was set up by freshman Kevin Lorcher (Rouen, France), who maintained possession through the neutral zone and into the Hawks' end. Lorcher then lofted a saucer pass from the leftwing circle over the sticks of a pair of Saint Anselm defenders to Berry, and he rifled a shot to the back of the net to give the Penmen a 2-1 edge at intermission.
Donovan again answered on the powerplay to deadlock the score at two just 26 seconds into the second period. Joey Agliato gave the visitors a 3-2 lead with 4:33 left in the frame when he tallied his second of the year off a feed from Donovan. Easton Miller tallied a powerplay marker 10:18 into the third to give Saint Anselm the final margin of victory.
Donovan led the way for the Hawks with two goals and an assist, and Kody Grondin added a pair of helpers in the win. Freshman Matthew MacInnis (Arlington, Texas) turned aside 23 shots in goal for Southern New Hampshire.
The Penmen return to the ice on Saturday when they travel to Stonehill College for a Northeast-10 tilt with the Skyhawks at 4:10 p.m. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday when it visits New England College at 7 p.m.
