TRIKALA, Greece – Junior Devin Gilligan (Amherst, N.H.) totaled 28 points and senior Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) added 26 as the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team improved to 3-0 on its trip to Greece with a 106-80 victory over the Trikala All-Stars, a team comprised mainly of players from Aries Trikala B.C., a member of the First Division of the Greek League.
Among the players for the Trikala All-Stars was Sotirios Karapostolou, a 2003 graduate of Southern New Hampshire University who was named a First Team All-American as a senior, the only player in the storied history of Penmen basketball to date to earn the honor. He ranks 10th in career scoring with 1,609 points and is in the top 10 of three other categories. A native of Larissa, Greece, Karapostolou has played professionally in his home country since graduation.
Gilligan totaled 20 of his 28 points over the final 20 minutes to lead five SNHU players in double figures. Sanders had 19 points in the first half and knocked down six three-pointers in the contest, while sophomore Chris Walters (Stamford, Conn.) totaled 17 points. Senior Kostas Mantalvanos (Athens, Greece) drilled a pair of three-pointers and finished with 11 points, while BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) recorded 10.
The Penmen jumped out to a 37-22 lead after the first 10-minute quarter and extended the lead to 64-36 at halftime. Southern New Hampshire held an 88-58 lead after three quarters.
Southern New Hampshire rounds out its four-game Greece trip Tuesday when it faces Mars in Thessaloniki at 7:30 pm local time. The Penmen will return to the United States on Thursday, July 2.
