MANCHESTER, N.H. – The fourth annual Sam Carey New Hampshire Classic, held in honor of former Penmen men's basketball standout Sam Carey, is set for Friday, August 21 at Manchester Central High School. The event begins at 6:00 pm with a high school all-star game, followed by the alumni game, featuring many players from throughout New England who played collegiately, including several Penmen.
Proceeds from the event will go towards a project to renovate the basketball courts across from Beech Street School in Manchester. The event is being organized by Mike Stys, who played for SNHU for two seasons from 2012-14 and grew up in Hooksett, playing with Carey, as both are Manchester Central alums.
Stys is playing in the event, along with SNHU Athletic Hall of Fame members John Baiano and Miguel Gonzalez. Also expected to play are Elijah Bonsignore, J.J. Harvey, Tory Stapleton, Stephen "Stix" Wood and P.J. Young. All except Bonsignore, Stys and Wood were teammates with Carey at Southern New Hampshire.
Sam Carey played at Southern New Hampshire from 2004-08. A four-year starter, the 6-9 center played in 113 games with 109 starts and ranks 16th in program history in scoring with 1,506 points while also grabbing 678 career rebounds. After playing professionally in Uruguay, Germany, Canada as well as with the hometown Manchester Millrats, Carey lost his life in November, 2011 in a single-car accident returning home from Canada. He was inducted into the SNHU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
