Senior Rodney Sanders (Elizabeth, N.J.) dropped a game-high 22 points and junior Chris Walters (Stamford, Conn.) notched his seventh double-double of the season as the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team won for the fifth time in six games with an 80-66 victory against the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night at Nolan Gymnasium.
Sanders hit eight of his 11 shots from the field, including all three of his 3-pointers, and went 3-for-4 from the line, while tallying four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Walters posted 18 points (5-8 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 7-8 FT) and gathered a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with two assists, two steals and two blocks. Senior BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) matched his season high with 15 points (5-9 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 4-4 FT), while grabbing four rebounds. Freshman Daquaise Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) also scored in double figures with 11 points (4-9 FG, 3-3 FT) and four boards.
Pharroh Gordon led Saint Rose with 16 points.
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first two-and-a-half minutes on five points from Damon Coleman and led by three over five minutes later when Southern New Hampshire ripped off a 22-5 burst – with 12 points from Sanders – to grab a game-high 14-point lead at 35-21 with 7:23 remaining in the opening half.
Eight points from Gordon powered a 10-2 counter-run that pulled Saint Rose within six at 37-31 with 5:19 on the clock. The Penmen would bring a 46-40 lead into the locker room.
The Southern New Hampshire lead would hover between three and seven points for most of the second half until a Sanders triple sparked a 9-0 run that iced the game by stretching the advantage to 14 at 74-60 with 3:09 left. The margin would remain double digits the rest of the way.
Junior Devin Gilligan (Amherst, N.H.) added eight points (3-5 FG, 2-2 FT), while classmate Adrian Oliveira (Pawtucket, R.I.) chipped in four points (2-4 FG), five assists and three rebounds.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire hit season highs in both field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage as it outshot Saint Rose, 57.1 percent (28-49) to 40.7 percent (22-54), including 71.4 percent (5-7) to 27.8 percent (5-18) from long range. SNHU also cleaned up at the line with its second highest mark of the season, outshooting the Golden Knights, 90.5 percent (19-21) to 68 percent (17-25).-SNHU captured the glass (37-23) and the paint (36-26), while Saint Rose held advantages in points off turnovers (24-12) and second chance points (14-8).
-Walters' 16 rebounds are the most since Sam Carey ripped down 16 boards against Pace University on Feb. 9, 2008.
-Sanders scored in double-digits for the 11th straight game.
