Sophomore Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) buried her second goal of the season with 2:03 remaining in overtime to lift the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday night.
With time winding down in the extra session, junior Erin Frost (East Andover, N.H.) worked her way to the front of the Warriors' cage. Frost was able to get the ball past a defender to Holt on the doorstep, and she rifled a shot just inside the nearside post to give the Penmen their third-straight win.
Southern New Hampshire trailed late in regulation after a Merrimack marker with less than 10 minutes to go, but used a late goal from junior Amaris Taylor (Tulsa, Okla.) to knot the score at two apiece. After Taylor slid an initial pass out on a penalty corner, freshman Maaike Gerkema (Driebergen, The Netherlands) returned the feed and Taylor punched a shot between Katharina Ohmen's pads to make it 2-2 with 4:33 left in the second half.
Merrimack opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the opening frame when Taylor Simpson found the back of the net at 7:22. Mary McNeil had her shot stopped, but the rebound bounced up into the air and Simpson batted it home just under the crossbar.
After neither side scored for the remainder of the first half, the Penmen answered midway through the second. Frost maneuvered into the center of the circle, and after shedding a defender, sent a reverse-stick shot to the far post to even the score at one 13:10 into the stanza.
Simpson returned the favor to McNeil, setting her up for her fifth of the year with 8:51 left to play to make it a 2-1 affair. Taylor wasted little time in responding, as she needed just over four minutes to provide both sides with bonus field hockey.
Sophomore Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) earned her seventh win of the season after stopping 13 shots in nearly 83 minutes of action. Ohmen suffered the setback for Merrimack despite registering eight saves.
