Senior Nacho Hernando-Angulo (Logrono, Spain) put the finishing touches on the most successful career in Southern New Hampshire University men's cross country history at the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship meet on Saturday. Hernando-Angulo, who earned a spot in the national final for the second consecutive season, finished No. 75 overall in a field of 242 runners in a time of 31:56.
Sophomore Vincent Kiprop of Missouri Southern State University captured the individual national title after traversing the 10,000-meter course in 29:07. Alfred Chelanga, the defending national champion, of Shorter University checked in second overall with a time of 29:36. Adams State University earned its 24th National Championship and 12th at the NCAA Division II level after totaling 54 points as a team.
After becoming the first Penmen men's cross country student-athlete to earn a berth in the NCAA National Championship a season ago, Hernando-Angulo improved 16 spots on his performance in 2015. In 2016, he set a new school record in an 8,000-meter event (24:40), posted the highest finish at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship (No. 2) and NCAA East Regional (No. 2), and also become the first two-time United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honoree and two-time Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference selection. In two years at SNHU, Hernando-Angulo placed in the top-five in 11 of the 14 races in which he competed, won three individual titles, set a new school 8K record four times and owns four of the top-five fastest times in program annals.
