Junior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) made 52 saves, but his counterpart, Joey Ballmer, turned aside all 22 shots he faced on Saturday evening as the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team fell to Johnson & Wales University in the opening round of the Manchester PAL Stovepipe Tournament, 4-0.
Slatky made 19 stops in the first before adding 33 in the final two periods, while the Penmen offense, which was averaging more than five goals per game entering Saturday, put seven shots on goal in each of the first two frames and mustered up eight in the third.
Southern New Hampshire had scored first in each of its previous seven games this season, but the Wildcats put a halt to that streak five minutes into the opening period. Logan Fortier crashed down from the right point and slid a pass to Nicholas Gray in the slot, and he one-timed a shot to the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Johnson & Wales doubled its advantage just nine seconds into the second on Victor Carlsson's second of the season, and its lead lengthened to three when Alan Boozer tucked a wraparound attempt inside the near post with 3:09 to go in the stanza. The score remained unchanged until the final minutes of the third, when Fortier tucked home an empty-netter to complete the game's scoring.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire's four-game winning streak came to a close on Saturday, as did its six-game home unbeaten streak. The Penmen were defeated at the Ice Den for the first time since January 16, 2016 against Morrisville State.
- SNHU was tagged for 10 minutes worth of penalties on five infractions, while the Wildcats were assessed nine minutes on three misdeeds. Neither side was able to convert on the powerplay.
What's Next:
The Penmen return to action on Sunday (Nov. 27) at 1:30 p.m. when they take on Suffolk University in the Manchester PAL Stovepipe Tournament consolation game.
