Senior Michael Busconi (Watertown, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season, but Suffolk University scored three times in the second period to propel itself past Southern New Hampshire University, 5-1, in the Manchester PAL/Stovepipe Tournament consolation game at the Ice Den on Sunday.
The Penmen trailed early for the second consecutive game, as the Rams scored three times before SNHU was able to find the back of the net. Santon Turner gave Suffolk a 1-0 lead midway through the first before David Lappin doubled the advantage 15 seconds into the second period.
Justin Holliday lengthened the Rams' lead to three at 12:03 with help from Tommy Bishop before the hosts were able to get one back. Junior Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) gathered the puck at the Penmen blue line moved through the neutral zone with graduate student Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.). Collins took a feed from Baylis just outside the offensive zone before finding a trailing Busconi, who snapped a shot to the top right corner to make it 3-1.
It would be as close as Southern New Hampshire would come, however, as Suffolk regained a three-goal lead with 1:06 left in the second before tacking on another goal just over five minutes into the third.
Kevin Venturoso earned the win in goal for the Rams after making 38 saves in the victory. Junior Matthew MacInnis (Arlington, Texas) started between the pipes for the Penmen and registered 17 stops in the first 32:03 before giving way to freshman Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.), who turned aside 18 shots in the final 27:57.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Suffolk by a 22-9 margin in the first period, but the Rams maintained a 31-17 edge for the final two periods and a 40-39 advantage for the game.
- The Penmen were whistled for three penalties and six minutes worth of infractions, while Suffolk was assessed eight minutes on four misdeeds. Southern New Hampshire was 0-for-4 on the man advantage, while the Rams were 0-for-3 on the powerplay.
What's Next:
The Penmen resume play on Tuesday (Nov. 29) when they host Saint Anselm College (3-3, 2-0 Northeast-10) at the Ice Den in a Northeast-10 Conference and Queen City Cup clash at 7:30 p.m.
