Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) scored a game-high 16 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team lost to Assumption College, 66-54, Wednesday evening at Laska Gymnasium.
Lorenzen shot 6 of 14 from the field, including 1 of 1 from long range, and 3 of 3 from the line, while pulling down five rebounds and making four steals. Junior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) netted a season-high 10 points (4-5 FG, 2-2 FT) and collected three boards.
Allison Stoddard led the Greyhounds with 15 points, while Morgan O'Brien supported her effort with 14 points.
Playing without three key members of the rotation, Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 2:17 on four points from junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.), but back-to-back 3-pointers from Stoddard jump-started a 15-2 rush for the Greyhounds that gave them a 15-11 advantage with 2:46 to go in the opening quarter. Layups from sophomore Aaliyah Paxton (Hainesport, N.J.) and Conrad would tie the game with just over a minute to play before a Stoddard bucket with 26 seconds left handed Assumption a 17-15 edge after one.
After a pair of free throws from Lorenzen evened the score at 17-all under two minutes into the second stanza, eight straight points from O'Brien powered an 11-0 run that gave Assumption a 28-17 lead with 5:49 to go before the half. The Greyhounds expanded their lead to 38-25 at the break.
With the gap at 12 midway through the third quarter, a three-point play by Lorenzen sparked an 8-4 spurt that was capped by a 3-pointer from freshman Tessa Stewart Morrison (Ashburton, New Zealand), which trimmed the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 49-41 with 2:02 to play. Assumption held a 51-43 lead heading into the final frame.
Back-to-back baskets from Conrad pulled the Penmen within six at 53-47 less than two minutes in, but a pair of O'Brien treys fueled a 13-4 push that sealed the victory and put the Greyhounds up, 66-51, with 1:01 on the clock.
Stinson chimed in with eight points (4-12 FG), three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals, while sophomore Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) posted eight points (2-2 FG, 2-2 3-FG, 2-2 FT), six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
