BOX SCORE

When and Where: November 4, 2016 – Hooksett, N.H. (The Ice Den)
Score: Southern New Hampshire University 4, Franklin Pierce University 1
Records: SNHU 2-0 (1-0 Northeast-10), FPU 1-2 (0-1 Northeast-10)

Junior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) stopped 37 shots and freshman Jared Goudreau (Manchester, N.H.) tallied the first two goals of his collegiate career to lift the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 4-1 win over Franklin Pierce University in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams.

The line of Goudreau, graduate student Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) accounted for eight points on Friday. Collins logged a three-point evening with a trio of helpers, while Baylis added a goal and two assists in the win.

In similar fashion to their season opener, the Penmen struck first in the early stages of the first period with senior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) once again netting game's first goal. Classmate Nathan Bergeron (Auburn, Maine) keyed the play with a breakout pass that sprung freshman Brett Strawn (Wareham, Mass.) on a two-on-one with Sylvia. After moving through the neutral zone along the leftwing wall, Strawn slid a pass to Sylvia at the top of the circles and he rifled it past the glove of Ravens' goaltender Tom McGuckin to make it 1-0 at 5:03.

The score remained unchanged for the remainder of the stanza, as Slatky registered 10 of his 15 first period saves after the marker and McGuckin countered with nine stops of his own.

Southern New Hampshire extended its lead to a pair just over two minutes into the second when Baylis cashed in on the powerplay. The puck worked its way around to junior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) at the top of the umbrella and his pass to Collins at the top of the left circle was one-timed to Baylis in the slot. Baylis found himself all alone between the hash marks, settled the puck and snapped a shot past McGuckin's glove to make it 2-0 with 17:38 remaining.

The Penmen were not finished in the second, and built a 3-0 advantage on Goudreau's first of the night last in the frame. Senior Michael Busconi (Watertown, Mass.) sent a stretch pass from his own left faceoff circle to Baylis on the rightwing boards at the far blue line. After Baylis left the puck for a charging Collins just inside the offensive zone, Collins carried the puck just beneath the goal line before he found a cutting Goudreau on the doorstep at 16:04.

Slatky increased his save total to 24 after a nine-save second before Franklin Pierce was able to solve him 34 seconds into the third. Nick Indelicato won a battle for the puck behind the Southern New Hampshire goal and kicked it to Alex Lester. Lester's initial wraparound attempt was stopped, but Indelicato and Kyle Gosselin crashed on the rebound, and Indelicato punched it home to trim the Penmen lead back to a pair.

Goudreau responded for Southern New Hampshire with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, as he finished off a beautiful three-on-one with Collins and Baylis. Goudreau knocked down a breakout pass at the Ravens' blue line before Collins grabbed the loose puck and drove towards the net. After three Franklin Pierce defenders converged on him, Collins curled and found Goudreau in the high slot, who then found Baylis. As he was falling down, Baylis returned pass back to Goudreau, and he one-timed a shot over McGuckin's blocker to cap the scoring.

Notes:
- The Ravens held a 38-33 advantage in shots, including a 14-7 edge in the third period.
- Southern New Hampshire was whistled for 18 minutes worth of penalties on nine infractions, while Franklin Pierce was assessed six penalties for 12 minutes. The Penmen were 1-for-5 with the man advantage while the Ravens were 0-for-8 on the powerplay.
- SNHU has posted back-to-back victories to open a season for the first time since the 2006-07 season, when it topped Johnson & Wales University and Western New England University on November 11 and 14, 2006.
