Junior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) registered his first career hat trick to highlight an eight-goal outburst by the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team, as the Penmen skated to an 8-4 win over Daniel Webster College at the Conway Ice Arena on Wednesday.
SNHU started fast and finished strong, as it scored four times in both the first and third periods. Freshman Brett Strawn (Wareham, Mass.) and junior Griffin Rogers (Sanbornton, N.H.) each tallied a goal and an assist, while graduate student Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Michael Busconi (Watertown, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of helpers.
The Penmen scored in nearly every possible way during the first 20 minutes of play. Junior Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) opened the scoring 2:26 into the contest with help from senior Nathan Bergeron (Auburn, Maine), and less than 90 seconds later, Busconi and Collins set up Rogers to extend Southern New Hampshire's advantage to a pair with 16:07 to go. After recording its first two goals five-on-five, SNHU closed out the opening stanza with a pair of special teams strikes. Sophomore Artem Efimov-Barakov (Khimki, Russia) collected his first of the year with a shorthanded tally at 14:22 before Moquin closed out the period with a powerplay goal with 1:30 remaining.
The offensive barrage continued in the second, this time it was the Eagles who jumped back into the game with a three-goal frame. Ryan Murray started the scoring with a man-advantage marker at 12:34 before Tanner Todd trimmed the Penmen lead back to two at 14:40. Todd again found the back of the net on the powerplay with 2:40 left, and the teams went to intermission with Southern New Hampshire in front, 4-3.
The Penmen put the game out of reach early in the third, as they scored four times in the first seven minutes of the third period. Moquin potted his second of the night off a feed from Collins at 2:55, and senior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) reestablished a three-goal edge with 15:22 to play in regulation. After Moquin completed his hat trick at 6:49, Strawn closed out the Southern New Hampshire scoring seven seconds later to make it 8-3. Daniel Webster added a late goal to provide the final margin of scoring.
Junior Matthew MacInnis (Arlington, Texas) earned the win in his first start of the season after making 24 saves. Ben Gagnon suffered the setback between the pipes for DWC despite turning aside 20 shots.
