Senior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, and freshman Jared Goudreau (Manchester, N.H.) assisted on three others on Sunday to lead the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Jason Ritchie Arena.
Graduate student Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) added a goal and an assist, while junior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) had a helper and classmate Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) steered aside 26 shots in the win.
After a scoreless first period that saw a combined 11 penalties and 30 minutes worth of infractions, the Penmen potted three goals in the second stanza to generate all the offense it would need. Senior Andrew Smith (Moneta, Va.) opened the scoring with his first of the season as 3:34 of the period off a drive from the right point from Goudreau and sophomore Dylan Sobczyk (Buford, Ga.).
Just over four minutes after Smith's strike, Southern New Hampshire increased its advantage to three with a pair of powerplay tallies. After Goudreau found Collins along the right wing, he broke in on a 2-on-1 with Sylvia. Collins slid a perfect feed through the slot to Sylvia, who hammered a one-timer to the back of the cage at 7:51. Just 40 seconds later, Collins added what proved to be a valuable insurance goal, on yet another man advantage, with a shot from the right point through traffic to make it 3-0 through two.
The Ravens came out flying in the third period, and trimmed the deficit to a pair 15 seconds into the frame. Nick Fotiu beat Slatky short side from outside the right post for his second of the year to close the gap to 3-1.
Franklin Pierce continued to apply offensive pressure, and midway through the third, Nick Indelicato was able to make it a one-goal game. Fotiu found Taylor Fletcher on the left side, and he slid a pass through the slot to Indelicato, who banged home the powerplay marker at 11:26.
It would be as close as the hosts would come to knotting the score, as Penmen maintained their one-goal advantage until the final moments of the third. Sophomore Artem Efimov-Barakov (Khimki, Russia) chipped the puck ahead through the neutral zone and into the offensive end of the ice. Sylvia raced in to collect the loose biscuit and tucked it into the empty net with 15 seconds remaining, giving SNHU the 4-2 triumph.
