Freshman Jared Goudreau (Manchester, N.H.) tallied his first career hat trick to provide the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team with all the offense it would need on Tuesday, as the Penmen skated to a 5-2 win over Suffolk University in nonconference action at the O'Neil Memorial Rink.
Junior Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) accounted for the remainder of the Southern New Hampshire offense with two goals in the second period, while graduate student Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) dished out three helpers and junior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) handed out a pair of assists.
Goudreau staked the Penmen to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play with a pair of markers that bookended the opening period. He registered his third of the year 2:04 into the contest from freshman Brian O'Callaghan (Quincy, Mass.), before potting his second of the frame at 18:51 with help from sophomore Anthony Gandolfi (Nutley, N.J.).
The score held until midway through the second, when Baylis' first at 6:35 sparked what proved to be a four-goal burst by the two sides over the ensuing 11:22. After senior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) and Collins set up Baylis on the powerplay to give SNHU a 3-0 lead, the Rams countered with two tallies to trim their deficit to a single goal. Brett Lawson cashed in his first of the season from Bryan Etter with 9:36 to go, and Stanton Turner's fifth of the year less than three minutes later made it 3-2 at 12:52. Baylis was not finished in the stanza, however, as he notched his second marker of the period with 2:03 to go off a feed from Moquin and Collins to put the Penmen back on top by two heading to the third.
Goudreau capped off his career night in the third with his fifth of the season on the man advantage at 9:12 to provide the 5-2 final.
Junior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) upped his record to 8-3-0 in goal for Southern New Hampshire, as he turned aside 31 shots in the victory. Michael Levine suffered the setback for Suffolk after making 16 saves in the first 49:12, before Kevin Venturoso closed out the final 10:48 with six stops.
