Marreiros Hauls in Both NE-10 Men's Tennis Weekly Awards for Second Time

NORTHEAST-10 RELEASE

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was chosen as both the Northeast-10 Player and Rookie of the Week for the period ending April 17, the league office announced Tuesday morning.

It is the second time this season Marreiros has captured both weekly awards and his fourth consecutive Rookie of the Week honor.

Marreiros went 8-0 during a 4-0 week for the NE-10-unbeaten Penmen, as he was a perfect 4-0 at No. 1 singles in wins against Stonehill College, Post University, Franklin Pierce University and Saint Michael's College, while going 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and winning his one turn at No. 1 doubles.

Marreiros beat Stonehill's Thomas Bellio, 6-3, 6-3, to start the week, before earning a 6-1, 6-2 non-conference decision against Post's Nikola Crvelin, the 19th-ranked singles player in the East Region. Marreiros then defeated James Bisazza of Franklin Pierce, 6-2, 6-3, and closed the week with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ben Lambert of Saint Michael's.

In doubles action, Marreiros and classmate Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) pulled out an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles against Stonehill's Tom Buckley and Jeffrey Gagnon, before Marreiros teamed with his brother and fellow sophomore, Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), for a 9-7 triumph against Post's Peter Fanous and Ludvig Henrikson in his only No. 1 doubles appearance of the week. Marreiros and Aubron cruised in their final two matches, posting an 8-1 win against Bisazza and Olivier Viel from Franklin Pierce before shutting out Saint Michael's Charlie Merry and Sam Laves, 8-0.

Marreiros is 22-9 overall this season, including 12-4 in singles play. He has won nine of his last 10 singles matches, including five-in-a-row overall and nine straight against Division II opponents. At doubles, he has also captured nine of his 10, including six straight. Marreiros is currently ranked as the 10th best singles player in the East Region, while he and Aubron are slotted No. 8 in doubles.

Marreiros and the Penmen (11-7, 9-0 NE-10) wrap up their regular season Wednesday, April 20 (3 p.m.) when they play host to Merrimack College (7-7, 6-0 NE-10), looking for their first undefeated conference mark ever.
