Powered by three goals in the first 33 minutes of play, the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team picked up a 3-2, nonconference victory over Saint Michael's College at Duffy Field on Wednesday.
After neither side was able to crack the scoreboard in the opening 17:05, the Penmen drew first blood when freshman Isabel Hoyt (Boscawen, N.H.) hammered home her first career goal on a rebound at the left post. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Purple Knights knotted the score at one apiece four minutes later off a penalty corner that saw Nicole White feed Jenna Deschaine for her first of the year.
The remainder of the first half belonged to Southern New Hampshire, which potted a pair of markers in the final five minutes of the stanza to effectively put the game out of reach. Freshman Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, The Netherlands) regained the one-goal advantage when she collected her own rebound at the left side of the cage and punched in her first career tally at 29:22. Classmate Kylee Veilleux (Sabattus, Maine) notched her first goal in a Penmen uniform 3:32 later with a redirect of sophomore Lindsey Poirier's (South Berwick, Maine) long cross to the front of the net.
Saint Michael's cut the lead back to a single goal just over 11 minutes into the second, but sophomore Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) kept the hosts off the board for the rest of regulation. Rennie stopped eight shots in her Southern New Hampshire debut, including four in final 35 minutes of action to secure the victory. Abigail Bowie suffered the setback for the Purple Knights despite turning aside 11 shots.
