Junior Amaris Taylor (Tulsa, Okla.) and sophomore Cassidy Huckins (Boscawen, N.H.) each registered a goal and an assist to lead the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team's 4-0 blitzing of Mercy College on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Larkin Field.
Southern New Hampshire was quick to strike as junior Erin Frost (E. Andover, Mass.) swept home a pass from Huckins on the left side of the circle just 3:48 into the contest to stake the Penmen to a 1-0 lead.
Just one second into the 19th minute, Taylor doubled the SNHU advantage as she snuck a shot from the left end line behind Mercy goalkeeper Julia Amell and inside the far right post from a tough angle after collecting a drive through traffic from freshman Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, Netherlands).
Junior Mikaela Gauvain (Salem, N.H.) widened the gap to three less than three minutes later when she launched a missile from the top-left of the circle that beat a diving Amell into the bottom left corner of the cage. Taylor picked up the assist after inserting the penalty corner to Gauvain.
The scored remained 3-0 into the second half until Huckins put a rebound attempt into the right side of the net following Gauvain's initial shot to make it 4-0 early in the 59th minute.
Notes:
-The four goals are the most ever for the Penmen against a non-first year Division II program.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) turned away both shots she faced over the opening 58:03, while junior Alexis Soucy (Windsor, Maine) stopped the only shot that came her way in the final 11:57.
-Amell made three saves in the first half, with Cheradyn Pettit stopping eight of nine shots for the Mavericks in the second half.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Mercy, 27-5, and also held a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners.
