When and Where: January 12, 2017 – Marlborough, Mass. (New England Sports Center)
Score: Becker College 4, Southern New Hampshire University 1
Records: SNHU 11-6, Becker 5-10
Freshman Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) stopped 42 shots in his first career start, but a Becker College goal with six seconds left in the second period proved to be the difference as the Penmen fell to the Ice Hawks on Thursday, 3-1.
Junior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) accounted for the lone Southern New Hampshire goal. Devin Smith led the Becker offense with two goals and an assist, while Brandon Morgan scored once and added a pair of helpers.
After neither side was able to solve the opposition's netminder for nearly 19 minutes of action, the Ice Hawks potted a momentum shifting goal to take a 1-0 advantage. Smith netted his first of the evening from Morgan and Bryan Parsons to give the hosts the lead heading into the break.
Moquin brought the Penmen even late in the second stanza with a powerplay marker. Senior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) and junior Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) set up Moquin for his fifth of the year at 15:36 to reset the game.
In similar fashion to the opening frame, Becker again used a swing goal from Smith late in the period to take a one-goal edge into the locker room. Smith scored what proved to be the game-winner on the man advantage from Morgan and Connor Allison to make it a 2-1 game through 40 minutes of play.
The Ice Hawks carried the momentum into the third, as Smith returned the favor to Morgan by assisting on his powerplay goal 54 seconds into the final period to provide the final margin of scoring.Â
