Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) scored a game-high 12 points and finished just shy of a double-double, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team suffered a 59-41 defeat at the hands of the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.

Lorenzen finished 3 of 11 from the floor, including 1 of 1 from beyond the arc, and 5 of 6 at the line, while grabbing nine rebounds and collecting four steals.

Katia Oge recorded a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Chargers, while Alexandria Kerr and Khayla Trowell also netted 11 points.

Southern New Hampshire held a 7-6 edge early on when an 11-2 rush – with five points from Allieyah Cubbage – put New Haven in the lead at 17-9 with 3:18 remaining in the opening quarter. The gap was still eight more than two minutes later when sophomore Aaliyah Paxton (Hainesport, N.J.) closed the stanza with four straight points to trim the SNHU deficit to 21-17 at the end of one.

Lorenzen scored five straight to open up the second quarter as part of a 7-0 spurt that leapfrogged the Penmen back in front, 24-21, just over four minutes in. Four lead changes and a pair of ties followed before a Trowell bucket with six seconds on the clock sent New Haven to the locker room with a 31-29 advantage.

That basket would wind up giving the Chargers the lead for good as they came out of the break on an 11-4 wave – with five points from Kim Talley – to seize a 42-33 lead midway through the frame. Neither team would score again in the quarter until senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) knocked down a jumper as time expired to pull the Penmen within 42-35 heading to the fourth.

New Haven would put it away with a 13-4 rush that featured six points from Oge and spanned nearly the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the quarter to crack open its largest lead of the day at 55-39 with 1:37 on the clock.

Junior Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) registered six points (3-6 FG) and three rebounds, while Ryan tallied five points (2-8 FG, 1-4 3-FG), three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added five points (2-3 FG, 1-1 3-FG) and two rebounds, with Paxton posting four points (1-3 FG, 2-2 FT), six boards and a pair of blocks.
